 This Primary Charge Roller (PCR) applies an even negative electrostatic charge over the surface of the printer’s photosensitive drum during the “conditioning stage” of the electrophotographic printing process used in printers like the HP LaserJet 1215, 1515, and 1510 series. The PCR consists of a carefully constructed core, often a tough black polymer, coated with conductive rubber.

A suitable mixture of AC and DC bias voltages is applied to the roller to erase any residual charges from the last cycle, and to charge the drum surface to a consistent negative potential. A failing PCR results in light prints, smudges, or streaks due to uneven or weak charging, and replacing it restores this crucial first stage of the imaging process.
